When we closed the last post I was actually thinking of Halloween and not really thinking of the two holidays in between. Labor Day always seems like a celebration of the end of the cookout season to me. Or, the sorrowful day we left the shore. This is not true for me anymore I seem to stretch barbeque into the comfort food season and the same with comfort food into the barbeque season. Sometimes you see me outside barbequing in the dead of winter. I have not gotten to the point where I get out the snow shovel and the ice scrapers to barbeque yet. Let’s not talk about snow! My back still hurts from last winter.
I am going to tell you of a place where we used to go during the Columbus Day Weekend Holiday. Even after seventeen years our family talks of all the fond memories and how we would like to take our Granddaughter there someday.
All these thoughts came back when I finished the first post for this blog and may be interesting to some of the first readers of this blog. Last week I had talked about hay rides. Hayrides are traditionally a harvest family activity probably derived from a hard day’s work on the fields as a way of entertaining family and friends. None the less, a fun family activity anyway! Then I was thinking of local places to go for hay rides and I decided it was too early to start referring places for hayrides. Not to worry we will tell you where to go and if you are not from the Philadelphia area, I will refer you to a tool to help you quickly search for farms in your area that offer hay rides with other harvest fun and festivals. The whole reason behind this blog is to make the journey to the coming holiday a time of excitement and memories making each holiday more special. I already searched on My Shopping Genie with excellent results tor farms and hayrides.
Enough about the Genie for now!
When I did my search I stumbled on a great place to go which I mentioned earlier. However, I did not mention this place was Rocking Horse Ranch in Highland, New York. The first year we went to Rocking Horse Ranch we went courtesy of the Starlight Foundation in 1992. We got this as a grant because of my daughter’s handicap. We went to Rocking Horse Ranch because her brother wanted to go to a Dude Ranch she said in her application to the Star Light Foundation. You can purely understand why we wanted to go back for two more years adding my son’s and daughter’s just younger cousins to the mix. What a terrific four days and three nights in the early fall in the ever legendary Catskill Mountains of New York. Just think of Rip Van Winkle!
Steve Turk and his family are your gracious hosts in this family owned treasure. Steve took over after his father past away a few years back. Below we will have the website link to go and visit. Be sure to take notice that all your meals are included by a renowned chef during your stay making the total package worth your time to look into.
Wait a minute! I am not leaving Labor Day out of the picture!
The reason why I suggested Rocking Horse Ranch now is either you may want to postpone that final cookout for a week, put the grill away a week earlier or schedule your Columbus Day Weekend at Rocking Horse Ranch (Kid’s Weekend). With the crisp fall weather, the clopping of horse hooves, the endless activities and the spectrum of autumn color will be a weekend your family will never forget.
