When we were
researching the video for this blog post we came along some very disturbing
video about a day whose only intent is to enhance, rekindle or refresh the
romance or the closeness of a relationship. Some videos like the one you
previewed on this post told the history as well as the evolution of Valentine’s
Day. Others so obsessed with the rituals of the past which tells of how
Christians have re adapted past rituals into the celebration of Valentine’s Day today
in manner to influence our feeling on what is right for us to celebrate.
Others have taken a religious aspect to Valentine’s Day when viewed we could
truly understand the reason why the group feels they cannot participate by its
beliefs in the way it was presented. For me Valentine’s Day is a day we
celebrate a ritual of it’s time in a modern day civilized manner. The whole
aspect of it originally adapted to Christianity from Pagan lore, really Roman
History, is in no doubt adapting rituals of fertility into a day of prospective
romance or taking the time to honor or cherish someone loved. A way of
celebrating a spirit which lives in the heart of the many of us starting or honoring
a relationship in the joining of two different spirits in a bond they have in
common.
Valentine’s
Day is a day to honor the whole concept of commitment and relationships when
many of us have doubts about commitment. So why would anyone want to condemn
commitment anyway? Love and commitment is practiced through most but not all
religions. However, some form of commitment is practiced though all religions.
Even most non-religious individuals believe in some form of commitment. Not only
Valentine’s Day but at other special days a year we take the time to honor
different relationships in the different ways we are committed to those individuals.
We as a people who care enough to set aside time to honor those who play an
important role in our lives should be the people who are respected and not
those who condemn acts of kindness. Or, as many would say the traditions Hallmark
is built upon. It seems only right we take a day to celebrate what attracts us
to one another as a building block to better, stronger relationships with couples
as well as family and friends from a ritual which seemed to be intended by
history or lore for the growth of a population. We have evolved a long way from
a ritual of chasing and mating by honoring with the concept of couples, family,
and friends promoting togetherness with
the same concepts of other Hallmark Holidays of friendship, love and trust.
As we heard criticisms
of Valentine’s cards being exchanged amongst classmates as well as others we
have to wonder if it is an effort to break the will of our spirit or a holiday
itself. Instead of promoting the closeness of friendship Valentine’s Day is condemned
for its commercial value. Or, taking the social ills as related to a Pagan Society
of the past and identifying it with the social problems of today while
connecting the two eras in an absurd, narrow minded, self-important manner. This
should be disturbing to the most of us who celebrate any holiday where we can’t
and will never make the connection by something which could be considered more
myth than history or just petty personal opinion. There are rituals of
Valentine’s Day’s Pagan past that are disturbing to say the least, but why take
the time to tromp on one of the most celebrated holidays of the year now civilized
for today’s society? As a people we celebrate or at the very least try to
understand the history behind the days we celebrate making some of the wrongs
of the past right. Dragging some of the wrongs of the evolution or a society
namely ancient Roman history into a celebration of the times, should be more
discretional not to discourage beliefs in kindness and generosity considering
we live in such a time of political correctness. Or, is the true meaning of
Politically Correctness bullying the rest of a society into what is one person’s
special interest. Even more so, a true a form of Marxist or Stalinist mindsetin in the
place of true Americanism where we cannot feel free to practice our beliefs
because someone else’s beliefs are more important to only that individual or a
small select group. Valentine’s Day should be a day not celebrated by others
only because of a belief or religion, but should at the very least be respected
as a day bringing us together in our relationships and friendships.
If what I am
writing here does not please the critics of any holiday or why or so
Christianity has changed ancient traditions to meet a more civilized world I
don’t care for their opinion as I am sure they don’t care for mine! Because to
me and the many and not the few, a day like Valentine’s Day can be celebrated
with something as simple as a KISS or even simpler yet, CARING for one or one another!
This is something we all need to work on starting today by living and having
respect for the beliefs of others. Then and only then we will begin changing
this world the way we know it today to a world more suited to all of us
together.
