In some ways when I write I get caught up in adult views of celebrating holidays. When we were developing ideas for Holiday Specialties I was thinking with the young in mind as well as making Holiday Specialties interesting to parents and adults. We all are related to children as an aunt, uncle, cousin or grandparent and doing special things for the younger members of our families helps bring back the excitement of our youth through them. We all need reasons to get together with those we enjoy spending time with and togetherness is what makes life worth living for the most of us. With that said, we enjoy giving you different looks into an area rich in history and tradition as the Philadelphia, Eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey¸ Delaware and Eastern Maryland in what they have to offer. But, while we are at it we want to tell you about us and interesting places that do not seem heavily advertised and are unique places when visited with a memorable experience.
So what does
all this have to do with St. Patrick’s Day?
Just keeping in touch with ideas of the way we celebrate St. Patrick’s
Day as adults and the culture of the celebration itself.
In Ireland
when St. Patrick’s Day was celebrated it was considered a National as well as a
religious holiday so all the Pubs and Taverns were closed. This made St
Patrick’s Day as much of a drinking culture as we as Americans portray it to
be. In our Country it is not a national holiday and by the Catholic Church it
is considered a day of recognition of St. Patrick more than a holiday or a holy
day of obligation. So we as Americans have a different culture of celebration
from in the home land of St. Patrick. As well as celebrating in Pubs and
Taverns we have come up with other ways of honoring St. Patrick as well as what
the Irish decedents have brought to us as tradition. This year as we celebrate
we owe it to ourselves to understand St. Patrick as well as a people who
brought their spirit of sharing and friendship the key ingredient to what St.
Patty’s Day is all about.
As adults we
all do enjoy the nature of the Irish and how they gather in festive song,
dance, food and spirits. When you think of the roots of folk music and
celebration you truly see why we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day the way we do as
the melting pot society America is. By celebrating St. Patrick’s Day as a festival,
we honor the ways of an entire European culture in one day with many countries of
Europe’s similarities yet different customs. The most important point is people
enjoy celebrations and festivals while we need as people to get together
to enjoy life. I can’t think of any better day of the year to symbolize celebration
than St. Patty’s Day! Well, maybe until Oktoberfest anyway!
